2022 Plastic & Ceramic, Facets Of Traditional Craftsmanship: So Different, So Similar

Taiwan has rich history in developing Ceramic and Plastic products. Ceramic posses a 2.000+ year old tradition, Plastics, a much more recent one. “Tradition” though, is not necessarily time-related, but is defined as collective knowledge that is passed from person-to-person, generation-to-generation. In addition, Both practices, in their names or discipline description, contain the word “Plastic” (Plastic - deriving from the Greek word “plastikos” that means able-to-be-shaped). Plastic, directly uses the word “plastikos”, while Ceramic belongs to the Plastic Arts group. So, can Products combine these 2 materials that look-feel so different but their Principle is so similar? Students will be asked to analyse Plastic and Ceramic materials and create meaningful and conceptually exciting objects merging 2 Crafts, 2 Industries that although sound so different, they have a lot in common.
