The goal of this course is to train designers on three-dimensionality, and the spatial way of thinking.; enabling novice design students to gradually get familiar with the principals and methods of design conceptualisation. Implementing and practising activities with different themes to acquaint students with knowledge for generating design solutions; adopting a way of multiple observation to develop design creativity; using the tie between physical expression, mixed materials, and creative expression to synthesise with product experience. The learning process of concept intake, method of action and visual modulation, investigating the process of design conceptualising, and the possibilities of representational sketching. Through the combination of theory and practice granting the individual creative and independent thinking, allowing life experiences to be integrated with expertise, to lay a good foundation for the future path of design.

This core curriculum of product design emphasizes the overall performance of design method, language expression, and creation quality. In the form of studios and product release, the course aims at the findings of the environmental messages, shaping the design issues, and developing the thinking and execution ability about product details and productions and further transforms them into diverse design experiences. Through the illustration, oral communication, graphics design, practical action, and design release, it is expected that the designers’ professional abilities on implement and discourse will be upgraded. The learning points of each stage include concept design, draft interpretation, detailed expression of the visual models, computer simulation, model production, and exhibition planning. The achievements of the past years have been released in several international design exhibitions and won some awards from international competitions.

Product Design III and IV aim to help the Department’s students to establish the understandings of the industrial market and design process. The courses’ instructions focus on the market, and through the research and understanding of society trends, human natural needs and operation process, building the basic foundation for designing innovative products; through the design development process, students continue to practice divergent and convergent thinking on design standards, so that product designs can be closely linked with market trends and the essence of consumption. The works can then be presented in concrete objects or virtual images, reflecting the diverse possibilities of modern product design.

The foundation for Product Design III and IV is established on the course works of former art practices, design drawing and product design I & II; the courses’ main purpose, however, is to learn the complete procedure of industrial design. As a result, the expression of ideas, the set and studies of user groups, the continual brain storming and examination of the product forms, the management of model completion and the design of illustrations have to be closely associated with one another, so that product design can be expected to cooperate with the actual manufactures end of the industry in the future.

The Integrated Product Design course is led by all faculty of SCID, all projects are guided on an one-on-one basis according to the difference of personal interest. Within one year, the students not only have to complete one’s design as a conclusion for four year study, but also planning and executing a large-scale exhibition with annual year book publication thru team work. All above will be examined in the YODEX( Young Designers’ Exhibition). To integrate personal performance and team efforts, all discussions among advisors and students should base on humanity and try out all possibilities of scenarios. The scenarios always consist of the learning of experiments, re-ideation, interpretation, and user experience from the past. In the limited time, the course is not just a test of design, but also on decision-making, problem-solving and perseverance.

The projects are launched by students, but convergent with the industry together build up a fresh design point with multi-face value, and student gets to know oneself better for future development.
